Summary: Edgar Wright's unexpected box office smash combines music, car chases and Tarantino-esque dialogue with intoxicatingly vibrant results.
It's so refreshing to chance upon a film that is so assured, so kinetic and so brazenly opposite to what should be box office gold. Baby Driver raked in nearly a quarter of a billion dollars from a relatively modest budget of $34m. Sure it's got car chases, some solid names and pretty faces in the cast and the odd shoot-out to boot but it's got something else: attitude.
Combining the sheen of a jolly Hollywood musical and the edgy swagger of a Tarantino crime thriller, Edgar Wright's Baby Driver plays out like an epic music video against a Michael Mann backdrop.
It follows a reserved yet expert young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) who insists on timing his high speed escapes to the beats of his stash of iPods. Naturally he wants to get out of the game but an overbearing crime boss (Kevin Spacey) insists on the old cliche of one last job involving a trio of dangerous thieves (Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Eiza González) before he drive off into the bubblegum pop sunset with the girl of his dreams (Lily James).
Wright, with the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz behind him, has a gift for exploiting archetypes and stereotypes to his advantage sending them into his scenes like cannon fodder for his surprising scripts and filming choices to pick off like fish in a barrel. Be sure to take the ride into Wright's cinematic fever dream - it's exhilarating escapism.
