Summary
: After a 20 year wait, it's sad that one of the funniest gags in the classic comedy's sequel is in the film's title.

I liked the first 'Dumb and Dumber'. I liked it a lot. Alas, the sequel (which limps in after a two decade wait) just doesn't have the same effect.

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels return with enthusiasm but struggle to connect with their characters that have remained stuck in the 1990s era of gross-out antics. But tasteless gags aren't the film's problem; there just aren't enough good jokes overall whether its wordplay or slapstick.

Writers and directors Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly continue their bad streak by putting together a film that coasts by on silliness and only occaisionally threatening hilarity. The first film was so loaded with comedy that it demanded repeat viewings to digest them all. It's a shame that 'Dumb and Dumber To' lays all its cards out early on and spreads them thinly across its runtime. Perhaps most disappointing of all is that this sequel doesn't even try anything new.

'Dumb and Dumber To' is so similar in plot to the first one that it hardly seems worth making - there's a road trip to track down a girl, a traitor taken along for the ride, jealousy among the two friends and then a similarly far fetched twist at the end. Even the end credits shows scenes from the original film. This isn't nostalgia; it's just a reminder that the first one was way better.
