Summary
: Leave your reservations at the door - this Lethal Weapon TV reboot is fuelled with a firestorm of bromantic chemistry.

I didn't expect to enjoy Lethal Weapon as much as I did. Having grown up watching and rewatching the films on VHS, DVD and then Blu-ray, I was somewhat attached to the idea that only Mel Gibson and Danny Glover could play odd couple detectives Riggs and Murtaugh. As far as escapist action flicks go, the Lethal Weapon franchise struck just the right balance of overboard thrills and genuine laughs.

When the TV series came into being, I thought it'd crash and burn like so many other ill-advised cash-ins before it. But Lethal Weapon the TV series has got that spark and energy to convert the casual fans, die hards and the modern audiences who only know Mel Gibson for drunken rants.

The series stars Damon Wayans as Roger Murtaugh, your classic by the book old school detective. Loving wife and kids, nice house, dodgy heart. Just wants to make it to retirement without getting killed. Clayne Crawford literally steals the show as Martin Riggs, a Navy SEAL-turned-police officer from El Paso, Texas whose borderline suicidal antics get him plenty of notice at the LAPD's Robbery/Homicide division and an unlikely partner in Murtaugh.

You just know they'll get along but it's the chemistry that resonates stonger than the stereotypical characters and Wayans and Crawford really, really click. You just have to go into a series (or indeed film) like Lethal Weapon with an open mind. This isn't some hard-hitting police procedural thriller and it shies away from being completely delirious on the comedy front as well. The middle ground is somewhat risky and Lethal Weapon navigates it well - ping-ponging its tone and backstories with skill.

If you get offended by casual violence and a lack of realism, you'll probably want to go for NYPD Blue. But if you're looking for silly, breezy and genuinely funny entertainment, Lethal Weapon hits the bullseye.
